Tour Itinerary

Two single beds with white linen against a wood-panelled wall, beside a glass shower.
DAY 1

Arrive in Hong Kong

Your trip begins in Hong Kong, where temples that are centuries old sit in the shadow of glass towers. Check in to the hotel, take whatever time you need after your flight, then meet the rest of your group. Nothing is planned for today, so it is a chance to rest, find something to eat nearby or take a first walk around the neighbourhood before the trip properly gets going tomorrow.

  • Room TypeHotel
A group of travellers takes a selfie on a viewpoint high above Hong Kong's skyscrapers and harbour.
Two travellers watch a lit-up ferry cross the harbour below Hong Kong's glowing skyscrapers at dusk.
DAY 2

Star Ferry and Victoria Peak

A full day to see Hong Kong properly. Start by crossing Victoria Harbour on the Star Ferry, with the skyline rising on both sides of the water, then head up to Victoria Peak for one of the best views over the city. The rest of the day is yours to explore the streets at your own pace, and once it gets dark, Hong Kong's nightlife is right on your doorstep.

Train to Yangshuo and a Village Visit

Leave Hong Kong on a high-speed train to Guilin, then carry on to Yangshuo, where limestone peaks rise one behind another as far as you can see. In the afternoon, visit a local village for a look at traditional rural life in this part of China, a much slower pace than the city you woke up in.

Cycling and Bamboo Rafting in Yangshuo

Today is spent in Yangshuo's countryside. First you set off by bike, riding past rice paddies with the limestone peaks all around you. Then you swap the saddle for a bamboo raft and drift slowly downriver with nothing to do but look at the scenery. It is one of the gentler days of the trip, and a good one to slow down before the next leg.

Another high-speed train takes you to Zhangjiajie, and from there you head on to Wulingyuan, your base for the next two nights. The high-speed train brings you to Chongqing, a huge, crowded city stacked up the steep hillsides where the Jialing River meets the Yangtze. Chongqing is where the fiery version of hotpot comes from, so dinner tonight is a bubbling pot of it, with the tingling heat of Sichuan peppercorns for anyone brave enough. It is not a zoo but a research and conservation base working to protect the species, with more than 200 giant pandas and over 100 red pandas living there. Frequently Asked Questions

How big are the groups on this tour?

Departures run with a minimum of 5 and a maximum of 16 travellers, aged 18 to 40s and from all over the world. Most people book on their own, so if you are travelling solo you will be in good company from the first night in Hong Kong. Booking with a friend or partner? Let us know and we will keep you together.

What is included in the price, and what is not?

Included: 16 nights in hotels, 20 meals (16 breakfasts, 2 lunches and 2 dinners), every activity on the itinerary, all transport between destinations by high-speed train and private vehicle, a group leader for the whole trip, local guides at the Terracotta Army and the Forbidden City, help planning your onward travel, and 24/7 support, including after the trip finishes.

Not included: international flights, travel insurance, visas, airport transfers, the meals not listed on the itinerary, drinks and spending money.

What is the currency?

Hong Kong uses the Hong Kong dollar (HK$) and mainland China uses the Chinese yuan (CN¥, also called renminbi), so you will need both. On the mainland most people pay by phone with Alipay or WeChat Pay, and both accept foreign bank cards, so it is worth setting one up before you travel and carrying some cash as a backup.

What kind of accommodation is included on this trip?

Hotels throughout, in twin or double rooms: two nights at The OTTO Hotel in Hong Kong, two at Yangshuo Mountain Retreat, two at Lanting Elegant Hotel in Wulingyuan (Zhangjiajie), two at Meihao R Hotel in Chongqing, two at Xu Li Traveling Hotel in Chengdu, one at Changan Hidden House in Xi'an, two at Shanghai Binjiang Xinjing Hotel and three at BaiYee Art Hotel in Beijing.

Solo travellers share with someone of the same gender. If you would rather have a room to yourself, ask us about a private room when you book. Hotels can occasionally change due to availability.

What meals are included in this trip?

20 meals: breakfast every day from day 2 to day 17, lunch on day 6 in Zhangjiajie and day 12 in Xi'an, and two dinners, a Chongqing hotpot on day 7 and Peking duck in Beijing on day 14, straight after your dumpling-making class. Other meals are not included, which leaves you free to try places like the Muslim Quarter night market in Xi'an.

Tell us about any dietary requirements or allergies when you book, so your group leader knows before you arrive.

Where do we spend the first night on tour?

At The OTTO Hotel in Hong Kong, where you stay for the first two nights in twin or double rooms. Airport transfers are not included, so you make your own way there on day 1.

Arriving a day or two early? Let us know as soon as you can and we will check availability and pricing for extra nights. Please note that accommodation may occasionally change due to availability.
