Do I need a visa for China?

Visa-Free Entry & Special Rules:

Visa-Free Countries: Citizens of certain countries (such as Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore, Germany, France, Italy, Australia, and the UK) can enter China visa-free for tourist stays ranging from 15 to 30 days depending on bilateral agreements.

144-Hour Visa-Free Transit: Travelers from over 50 countries (including USA, Canada, UK, Australia, New Zealand) passing through major hubs like Beijing or Shanghai to a third country can stay up to 144 hours without a visa.

  • Stay: Depends on your nationality's specific visa-free agreement (usually 15–30 days) or transit policy.
  • Passport validity: Must be valid for at least 6 months from your arrival date.
  • At least 2 blank pages in your passport.

Entry requirements

  • Valid passport (at least 6 months validity with blank pages)
  • Proof of onward travel (confirmed return flight or tickets to a third country)
  • Proof of accommodation (detailed hotel bookings covering your entire stay or a tour invitation letter)
  • Completed Arrival Card (distributed on the flight or at the border)

Applying for a Chinese Tourist Visa (L Visa)

If you do not qualify for visa-free entry or the 144-hour transit scheme, you must apply for a standard Chinese Tourist Visa (L Visa) before your trip.

How to apply:

  • Apply through the Chinese Visa Application Service Center (CVASC) or the nearest Chinese Embassy.
  • Required documents: Passport, visa application form (submitted online), flight itineraries, hotel bookings, or an official tour invitation.
  • Biometric data (fingerprints) is required for most applicants during submission.
  • Processing time: Standard processing takes 4-5 business days (express service is available for an extra fee).
  • Apply around 1 to 2 months before your intended departure date.

Traveling within China

A standard Chinese tourist visa allows you to travel freely across most of China, including Beijing, Chengdu, Xi'an, and Shanghai. Please note that certain remote regions, such as Tibet, require special regional travel permits in addition to your visa.
