Which Trip, and When?

Backpacking Colombia (9 days) spends most of its time in the Andes: Medellín, El Peñol rock and colourful Guatapé, the hot springs at Santa Rosa de Cabal, the Cocora Valley hike and a coffee farm, then flies to Cartagena for the old city and a day on the Rosario Islands.

December to March is the sweet spot for the whole route: the Coffee Region is at its driest, the Cocora Valley's wax palms are most often clear of cloud, and Cartagena is sunny and breezy. July and August are a good second choice. October and November are the wettest months in both the Andes and on the Caribbean coast, so expect afternoon rain on the hike and a greyer sea at the islands.
