Program Description

Lovina is a quiet stretch of black-sand beaches and fishing villages on Bali's north coast, and its local schools are full of children who love their sport. This program puts you in front of them as their coach, sharing your skills and showing them what sport can do for their physical and mental health.

You coach at local schools in town, working with children of different ages and skill levels. The sports are the ones the community loves most, football and basketball among them, and you are free to use your own training methods. Good coaching does more than improve a child's game: it teaches discipline, how to deal with losing and learn from it, and to aim higher in life.

Mornings are for planning your sessions and getting the equipment ready, and the coaching runs in the afternoon, around four hours of work a day in all. The coaching plan for the week ahead is confirmed every Friday at the project meeting, and it can change with the schools' own activities, the weather and local conditions. Equipment can be limited, so any kit or training aids you bring will be put to good use.

Evenings bring relaxed get-togethers with the other volunteers, and the weekends are free. Lovina's beaches, temples and markets are on the doorstep, and the local team will help you plan trips further afield.

What You'll Be Doing

  • Coach football, basketball and other popular sports at local schools.
  • Plan your sessions and prepare the equipment each morning.
  • Work with children of different ages and skill levels, using your own methods.
  • Teach the value of sport for physical and mental health, and of discipline and learning from defeat.
  • Share feedback and plan the week ahead at the project meetings.

Good to Know

  • Who can join. You need to be 18 or over, with basic English. No formal qualification is required, but you should have a background in sports coaching, mentoring or a related field, and a real passion for sport. Over 65? We will ask for a medical clearance confirming you are fit for the activities.
  • Paperwork. On signing up we ask for a criminal record check (CRB/DBS).
  • Health. Get travel and medical insurance before you arrive. Recommended vaccinations often include hepatitis A and B, typhoid, tetanus, Japanese encephalitis and polio.
  • What to wear. Sports clothes and shoes you can move in for the sessions, and a hat and sunglasses for the afternoon sun. Around Lovina, dress modestly: loose clothes that cover your shoulders and knees, especially at schools and temples.
  • The schedule can change. The schools' own activities, the weather and local conditions can move things around.

Aims & Objectives

  • Inspire local children to take up sport and keep playing.
  • Give them proper sports training, whatever their level.
  • Encourage them to aim higher in life.

Frequently Asked Questions

How can I prepare mentally?

Come with an open mind and realistic expectations. Life on a volunteer project is simpler and slower than at home: shared rooms, basic facilities, heat and humidity, and a culture with its own customs. Everyone feels a little out of place at first, and that is normal.

Before you travel, read the programme information we send you. When you arrive, the local team introduces you to the project, the house rules and local customs, and they are there to talk to if you feel homesick or unsure. Most volunteers find the first few days are the hardest, and the rest flies by.

Do I need to be fit/in shape for my project?

We should always be healthy and maintain our fitness. However, it depends on the project you choose and you should always be ready to work.

What should I wear? Is there a dress code?

Nothing formal. Pack modest, practical clothes that you do not mind getting dirty. On teaching and kindergarten projects, wear neat, casual clothes that cover your shoulders and knees. On construction and conservation projects, wear hard-wearing clothes and closed shoes you do not mind ruining, plus a hat and light long sleeves for the sun. Vest tops and short shorts are not allowed while you are working.

Away from the project, dress with respect for local customs, especially in villages and at religious sites. Your coordinator will tell you about any local rules when you arrive.

Is airport transfer part of the package?

Your arrival transfer is included. You will be met at the airport and taken to your accommodation, so there is nothing to arrange for the journey in.

The departure transfer at the end, from your accommodation back to the airport, is not included. You can add it as an optional extra in your account, or make your own way.

Once you have booked your flights, log in to your account and add them under Flight Details so we know when you are landing.

Can I contact other people who have booked onto the same tour as me?

Of course! We encourage everyone to talk over our social networks. You can find a list of them at the bottom of this page. If you’ve joined a tour, we will send you an invite to a dedicated Facebook group made for your tour a few weeks before it starts. Your tour guide and a tour manager will also be in the group to answer any questions you may have. You can also join the General Discussion Board on Facebook!

How old do I have to be?

You need to be 18 or over, and there is no upper age limit. If you are over 65, we will ask for a medical clearance confirming you are fit for the activities.
