We stay in hotels for most of the trip, with one night in a lodge. Rooms are Twin, Double, or Triple share, depending on the group and location. All accommodation is clean, comfortable, and well located.
Most accommodations have free Wi-Fi. The quality might be lower than you're used to but is generally fine for basic use.
Tipping is not required but is appreciated. It’s common to tip small amounts at restaurants and bars. If you feel your guides or drivers provided great service, tipping is welcome.
Your passport must have at least six months’ validity and two blank pages. You should also have proof of onward travel.
Most nationalities will need an ESTA, even if you’re not leaving the airport. Check your eligibility in advance.
If you’re a permanent resident of the US, Canada, UK, or Australia, you don’t need a visa for stays under 90 days. Always check the latest visa rules with your local consulate before travelling.
Your group leader can help you organise a taxi back to the airport. It costs approximately £20 or $40. You’re free to leave any time on Day 13, as there are no activities planned.
The tour finishes back in San José, where it started.
Yes, it’s highly recommended to have your onward travel booked before entering Costa Rica. You may be asked to show proof before boarding your flight.
If you arrive early, we’ll still pick you up from the airport and book you into our San José accommodation from the day you arrive. Extra nights can be arranged in advance.
Yes, Costa Rica is safe to travel to. While some areas are known for crime, they are far from where our tours go. Costa Rica is a very popular tourist destination, and with basic commonsense precautions, it is a great place to visit. Our tours visit places that are not just beautiful and exciting, but also known to be safe. Travelling as part of a guided group adds an extra layer of comfort and security.
The best time to visit Costa Rica is from December to April, during the dry season. This period offers plenty of sunshine, perfect for exploring jungles and relaxing on beaches. If you do not mind a light morning shower, May to November are quieter months to visit. In June and July, the rain often eases, and the forests are at their greenest.
Yes, absolutely. Just let us know when you book your trip and we’ll make sure your dietary needs are taken care of so it doesn’t affect your experience.
We recommend arriving on the official start date of the tour, as that’s when most travellers arrive. While there are no activities scheduled on the first day, the group usually meets for a welcome dinner around 7pm.
For group tours, your place will be confirmed when 6 or more people have signed up and at least four weeks (28 days) prior to the start of your tour.
For volunteer or private bookings, please wait 2-3 working days.
We will refund you the total amount if the tour is cancelled. Typically, group tours are confirmed six months before departure.
Your group leader will email you around 1 day before the tour starts.
Absolutely. Your payment is secure. Backpacking Tours is a licensed tour operator in Thailand (TAT Licence No. 11/12642), and we use trusted international payment providers. Your booking is safe, and our team is here to support you every step of the way.
Once you’ve booked your flights, log in to the Manage My Booking area of our website and enter your flight arrival details. If you’re arriving early, we can still arrange your airport transfer. If you also need extra nights of accommodation, let us know early so we can confirm availability and pricing.
International flights are not included in the price of any tour and will need to be booked separately. You’re free to book your own flights or book here.
Most things are covered, including activities, transport, accommodation, and some meals. You’ll just need money for extra meals, drinks, shopping, and any onward travel after the tour
Yes! Travel insurance is a must for all our trips. You’ll need to show proof (on your phone or printed) to your group leader when you arrive.

Awesome! Once you’ve booked, just let us know who you’re travelling with and we’ll make sure you’re roomed together. Easy as that!
Can’t convince your mates? No worries! Most of our travellers come solo, and it’s one of the best ways to experience a new destination.
You’ll join an instant crew, meet amazing people, and make new friends from day one. Plus, you can keep your travel plans flexible and fully your own.
Ready to roll solo? You won’t be alone for long.

We recommend using a Wise travel card. It works in most places and supports Apple Pay and Google Pay. ATMs are widely available, but some places may accept cash only, so it’s good to carry some local currency.
