Do British citizens need a visa for Mauritius?
No. UK passport holders are stamped in on arrival for a tourist stay, normally 60 days. The same goes for Irish, EU, US, Canadian, Australian and New Zealand citizens.
Mauritius keeps entry simple: for most of the world's passports there is no visa, no fee and no queue for anything except the stamp. What trips people up is the pre-arrival travel form, which is free but compulsory. This guide was checked against the UK Foreign Office advice and the Mauritius Passport and Immigration Office in September 2026.
Do I need a visa for Mauritius?
Visa-free entry: the United Kingdom, Ireland, every EU country, the United States, Canada, Australia and New Zealand are all on Mauritius's no-visa list. On arrival the immigration officer stamps your passport with the end date of your permitted stay, normally 60 days for a tourist visit. Longer stays can be applied for from inside the country, up to a maximum of 180 days in a calendar year.
Visa on arrival: many other nationalities, from Albania to Vietnam, are issued a 60-day visa at the airport, and a shorter list gets two weeks. If you are unsure, the Passport and Immigration Office publishes the full country-by-country list, linked below.
The All-in-One Travel Form: every visitor must complete the Mauritius All-in-One Travel Digital Form online before arriving, at safemauritius.govmu.org. It combines the immigration, health and customs declarations, is free, and gives you a PDF with a QR code to show at the airport. Fill it in up to 30 days before you fly. Turn up without it and you will be handed a paper disembarkation card instead, which is slower.
Transit: if you stay airside on a connection you need nothing. Leave the airport and the rules above apply.
- Permitted stay: normally 60 days, written in your passport on arrival, extendable at the Passport and Immigration Office up to 180 days in a calendar year.
- Passport validity: valid for the whole of your stay, with at least one blank page. Some airlines still ask for six months, so more is safer.
- Onward travel: you must be able to show a return or onward ticket.
- Health screening: if you arrive from a country where malaria is common you may be asked for a blood sample, and anyone who has been in the Democratic Republic of Congo or South Sudan in the previous 21 days is currently refused entry under Ebola precautions.
What you need to enter Mauritius
- A passport valid for your whole stay with a blank page.
- The All-in-One Travel Form with its QR code, printed or on your phone.
- A confirmed return or onward ticket.
- Proof of where you are staying, such as a hotel booking.
- Enough money for your stay; the official guideline is about US$100 a day.
- A visa, only if your nationality is on the list that needs one in advance.
Applying for a Mauritius visa (if your passport needs one)
Only a short list of nationalities must obtain a visa before travelling. If yours is one of them, the application goes to the Passport and Immigration Office through the nearest Mauritian embassy or honorary consulate.
- Check the list: the Passport and Immigration Office's country-by-country table says whether you are visa-free, visa on arrival or visa required.
- Documents: passport, application form, photos, return ticket, accommodation, proof of funds and a short letter explaining your visit.
- Where: the Mauritian embassy or consulate responsible for your country, or directly to the Passport and Immigration Office in Port Louis if you have a sponsor there.
- Timing and fees: allow at least four weeks. Fees, where charged, are small; confirm when you apply.

Can I work in Mauritius on a tourist stay?
No. Tourist entry does not allow employment; working needs an occupation or work permit arranged before you travel. Mauritius does offer a separate Premium Visa for remote workers staying longer.
