Tip: Make sure to get a local SIM card (Dialog or Mobitel are good options) and exchange some currency at the airport for the best rates. For longer trips, consider a travel money card like Wise to save on exchange fees.

Day 2: Colombo - City Exploration

Take a local bus or train south to Colombo, Sri Lanka's capital. Explore the blend of colonial architecture and modern skyscrapers. Highlights include the Gangaramaya Temple, Galle Face Green, and the bustling Pettah Market. It's a sensory overload in the best way possible!

Wake up early to climb Sigiriya Rock Fortress (Lion Rock) for sunrise. The views are breathtaking, and you'll beat the crowds and the heat. Later, hire a bicycle and explore the ancient city of Polonnaruwa, another magnificent UNESCO site with well-preserved ruins. It's a fantastic way to cover ground and soak in the history.

  • Best for: Stunning landscapes, hiking, cool climate
  • Getting there: Scenic train from Kandy to Ella
  • Don't miss: Kandy-Ella train ride, Little Adam's Peak

Prepare for some of the most stunning scenery Sri Lanka has to offer as you journey into the heart of the Hill Country. Ella is a backpacker favourite, known for its relaxed vibe, stunning hikes, and incredible views.

Day 8: The Iconic Kandy to Ella Train Ride

This is arguably one of the most beautiful train journeys in the world! Book your tickets for the Kandy to Ella train in advance (especially for 2nd or 3rd class unreserved for the full local experience). Hang out the doors (carefully!) and soak in the views of rolling tea plantations, misty mountains, and cascading waterfalls. It's an experience in itself.

Tip:Book your train tickets from Kandy to Ella well in advance, especially if you want a reserved seat. Otherwise, head to the station early to grab an unreserved 3rd class ticket and enjoy the local atmosphere!

Day 9: Ella's Peaks & Waterfalls

Spend the day exploring Ella's natural beauty. Hike up to Little Adam's Peak for panoramic views, walk across the iconic Nine Arch Bridge (try to time it with a passing train!), or challenge yourself with the longer hike to Ella Rock. Cool off at Ravana Falls.

Day 10: Ravana Falls & Chill Out

Enjoy a more relaxed morning. Visit Ravana Falls again if you wish, or simply chill out in one of Ella's many cafes, soaking in the mountain air and planning your next moves. This is a great spot to meet other travellers.

Day 11-12: Safari Adventure - Udawalawe National Park

  • Best for: Wildlife safari, elephants
  • Getting there: Bus/taxi from Ella to Udawalawe
  • Don't miss: Morning safari

From the cool hills, we descend to the dry plains for an exhilarating wildlife safari. Sri Lanka is renowned for its national parks, and Udawalawe is a fantastic choice for backpackers.

Day 11: Travel to Udawalawe

Take a local bus or arrange a shared taxi from Ella to Udawalawe. Check into a guesthouse near the park entrance. You can often arrange a morning safari directly with your accommodation.

Day 12: Morning Safari

Wake up before dawn for an unforgettable morning safari in Udawalawe National Park. This park is famous for its large herds of elephants, but you might also spot crocodiles, water buffalo, various bird species, and if you're lucky, even a leopard! It's an incredible experience to see these animals in their natural habitat. Udawalawe is often preferred over Yala for its consistent elephant sightings and generally fewer crowds.

Day 13-14: Southern Coast - Beaches & Galle Fort

  • Best for: Beaches, surfing, colonial history
  • Getting there: Bus from Udawalawe to Mirissa/Galle
  • Don't miss: Galle Fort, whale watching (seasonal)

After the safari, it's time to hit the beautiful southern coast of Sri Lanka, known for its golden beaches, surf breaks, and charming colonial towns.

Day 13: Mirissa Beach & Whale Watching

Head to Mirissa, a popular beach town perfect for surfing, swimming, and relaxing. If you're visiting between November and April, consider a whale watching tour – Mirissa is one of the best places in the world to spot blue whales. Spend the afternoon chilling on the beach or trying a beginner surf lesson.

Day 14: Galle Fort Exploration

Take a short bus ride along the coast to Galle. Spend the day exploring the historic Galle Fort, a UNESCO World Heritage Site with a fascinating blend of Dutch, Portuguese, and British colonial architecture. Walk along the ramparts, browse the boutique shops, and enjoy the sunset from the fort walls. It's a truly charming place to wander.

Tip: Whale watching season in Mirissa is typically November to April. If you're travelling outside these months, you might want to adjust your itinerary or focus on other coastal activities. Check out our Sri Lanka Weather: Best Time To Visit for more details.

Day 15: Departure from Colombo

  • Best for: Last-minute souvenir shopping
  • Getting there: Bus/train from Galle to Colombo
  • Don't miss: A final Sri Lankan meal

All good things must come to an end, but not before one last journey.

From Galle, take a train or bus back to Colombo. Depending on your flight schedule, you might have time for some last-minute souvenir shopping or a final delicious Sri Lankan curry before heading to Bandaranaike International Airport (CMB) for your departure. Make sure to allow ample time for travel back to the airport, as Colombo traffic can be unpredictable.
